  • Brendon Eating (2012)

Brendon Eating is a series of photographs and four paintings created from a documented intimate candle-lit dinner. The information-dense photos of the guest eating are simplified and focused on tightly cropped head-shots, showing the guest in a vulnerable, self-involved moment of eating and enjoying food. These moments reveal a suspension of social acting; here the guest was not interacting publicly, and instead was retreating privately. The viewer is made to feel that they are seeing something secret, bringing in notions of surveillance and the grotesque while conjuring conflicting emotions of attraction and repulsion.
